NJ2642 : Kelt and Kype on the Lour Burn

taken 11 years ago, near to Charlestown of Aberlour, Moray, Great Britain

Kelt and Kype on the Lour Burn.
Kelt and Kype on the Lour Burn.
This is the head of a male salmon or cock salmon which has been involved in the spawning ritual and has subsequently died. It can be recognised as a male by the curved jaws which are known as the Kype and which develop as the fish nears breeding condition. A female salmon is referred to as a hen but lacks the exaggerated kype of the cock fish.
