East Pool Mine
East Pool Mine
In 1921 a series of disastrous underground collapses made the existing East Pool Mine unworkable and put known reserves beyond reach. Therefore, this site was developed and was at work by 1924. The buildings on the right carry a 1922 datestone and housed a steam compressor, steam winding engine and boiler plant. The chimney served two boiler houses and carried the EPAL - East Pool and Agar Ltd - monogram. On the left is the new engine house for a 90" cylinder non-rotative Cornish beam pumping engine, built in 1892 and installed by 1924. Its boiler house is in ruins and lies between it and the chimney. On the right hand side of the engine house is a modern lift that has been integrated sympathetically with the older building.

The site is owned by the National Trust and is photographer friendly. There is parking and access from the adjoining Morrison's car park and this photograph was taken on a vile - dull, wet and very windy - day.
