Cromdale Kirk
Cromdale Kirk
Cromdale Kirk is a physical reminder of the last battle which took place during the Jacobite-Williamite struggle of 1689-90. The battle of Cromdale which took place on 1 May 1690 was little more than a rout and witnessed the final defeat of the Jacobite forces. It was here at Cromdale Kirk that a party of Jacobite soldiers were garrisoned, guarding the nearby ford over the River Spey. On the approach of the Williamite army, the church bells were rung frantically to warn the rest of the Jacobite army camped nearby. The tiny garrison was overwhelmed and could do little to prevent the slaughter which followed.
