The Old Dee Bridge, Chester
The Old Dee Bridge, Chester
This photo is taken from the top of the Bridgegate looking towards Handbridge. There is a very high tide running, which completely hides the weir, although that is mostly out of shot to the left. On the left of the railings, the angled bar, which indicates the end of the weir and disappears under the water, is a gate that can be opened at such high tides to allow vessels to cross the weir between the tidal and non-tidal parts of the river. This gate isn't used a great deal. Not so many years ago the Old Dee Bridge used to have two way traffic, which was interesting.
