Eagle Crag
Eagle Crag
A glimpse of the crag from the terrace route. Eagle Crag in Borrowdale was the last place in the lakes where Golden Eagles nested according to Harriet Martineau in her 1855 guide book. This was well before the famous pair in Martindale. Prior to that time eagles were widespread in the district. She recounts how local shepherds and fowlers would dangle off ropes and spear the eggs or chicks. Sometimes chicks were taken and sold. In a poignant report in her guide the last eagle to nest here was seen flying off in the direction of Eskdale following the killing of its mate. Even wild Eskdale could not save it from persecution. Hard to believe but some folk still kill birds of prey in our enlightened age.
