Conduit Hill
This street links High Street with Tower Street (A259). The second building on the right is the former chapel of the Austin Friars built around 1380 after their original building was destroyed in the French raid of 1377. After suppression in 1535 it passed into a number of hands before becoming a storehouse then Salvation Army barracks until turned into a community centre in 1903. The building was then host to dances and even became a temporary cinema before the current owners Cinque Ports Pottery moved in during the 1950s. About halfway down the hill would have been the site of the former town walls some of which still exist.
