Fissures in the sandstone cliff, Burton Cliff
These narrow caves are at the base of Burton Cliff. The cliff consists of sandstone layers of varying hardness - here the thinner layers are more resistant to weathering and erosion. Undercutting and rapid transport of the fallen material out to sea means that rockfalls here can involve the whole cliff face. Following the nearby dramatic cliff fall in April 2005 this stone was painted with 'keep out' and 'keep clear' warnings which have already weathered away.
