TL1706 : Looking towards the Old Oak, Hill End Hospital Cemetery, St Albans
taken 16 years ago, 3 km from St Albans, Hertfordshire, England
Hill End Mental Asylum opened in 1899 and a small plot of land was set aside as a cemetery. The first few burials were given gravestones but undoubtedly because of the expense later graves were given numbered iron grave markers. When the hospital was transferred to the NHS burials ceased and when the hospital closed in the 1990s the cemetery was forgotten. However people started to feel this was inappropriate and in 2007 moves were made to manage the area in a more respectful manner.
