In memory of the hulks, Ships Graveyard, Purton, Gloucestershire
The commemorative plaque was erected by the Friends of Purton to record the names of the various ships which were beached here in two episodes, in 1909 and 1951, when erosion of the river bank by tidal flows threatened the nearby Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. Some of the hulks have been aggregated to include a number of concrete boats. The full-size version shows the names of the ships which gave up their sea-borne lives to protect the canal in perpetuity.
