The reality is that the drop is not half as bad as those cringing on the other side of the fence imagine it to be. Up to the 1950s, men spent sixty years and more of their lives scraping a living on these shelves while the quarry owners lived the life of Reilly. In the nineteenth century they worked from 7am to 6 pm five and a half days a week with Christmas day as their only official holiday and too bad if it fell on a Sunday.
