TR0262 : Old railway van, Iron Wharf boatyard, Faversham Creek

near to Faversham, Kent, Great Britain

Old railway van, Iron Wharf boatyard, Faversham Creek
Old railway van, Iron Wharf boatyard, Faversham Creek
Scattered around the boatyard are dozens of old railway vans. This one has come to rest right on the bank of the creek. Most, I suppose, are used for storage, but some have been converted to chalets, and one (No. 33) houses a nautical bookshop (open at weekends).

The story, as I was told it by a resident, is that the area was once a railway yard, handling goods for the port of Faversham. When the tracks were lifted (probably about 1970) many railway vehicles were simply abandoned in situ, minus their heavy running gear - which went for scrap.
