Riddings House
Riddings House
Riddings House the family home of the Oakes family (early industrialists).
The worlds first oil refinery was at Riddings, distillation of crude oil (a natural oil well producing 300 gallons a day was found at Riddings on Oakes property) was undertaken by James Young for the Oakes and from this procedure paraffin (kerosene) was produced in 1850.
This changed forever the way the world was lit by the use of paraffin wax for candles and paraffin oil (kerosene) for lamps and heating. From this beginning the world changed forever from coal based to oil based mineral fuels and allowed the development of the internal combustion engine from which the modern world revolves.

Pictured is Ridding House and clock-tower which is now (unfortunately) a Retirement Home as its place in World History is unique but unknown.
