Higher Shelf Stones
Higher Shelf Stones
This photograph shows one of the Higher Shelf Stones. The rock in this area is Millstone Grit. This name is given to any Carboniferous coarse-grained sandstone found in northern England. As the name suggests it was cut into round flat stones for use in early water mills. This particular rock is pitted with holes about 30mm diameter, they are said to have been caused by Second World War fighter pilots flying along Doctors Gate then taking pot shots at the rocks at the head of the valley to improve their aim.
