The Roman Amphitheatre from the Newgate, Chester
The Roman Amphitheatre from the Newgate, Chester
This is a repeat of Phil Allison's First Geograph for this square SJ4066 : Chester, which he took in 1992. At the end of 2006, the nearest section of the Amphitheatre is under its winter protective material, following a long programme of excavation. The grey walkway to the right of the photo provides access for tourists to walk across the middle of the amphitheatre and, in the summer, watch the excavations taking place. Discussions about the other half of the amphitheatre under the Victorian and Georgian buildings, which are out of shot to the right, continue ad infinitum. And in the meantime the city council allowed a new court complex to be built on another part of the amphitheatre site.
