Sign at the George Hotel
This must have been an early use of 'The George' for an inn name.
The Hanoverian King George came to the throne in 1714 on the death of Queen Anne. In 1715 a Jacobite rebellion by supporters of James Stuart, the 'Old Pretender', was crushed at the Battle of Sheriffmuir by the Crown forces led by John Campbell the 2nd Duke of Argyll.
The George Hotel was established here in 1720 although the current building is more likely to date from the later part of the 18th century.
