The course of a burn
The course of a burn
This burn flows through a field to the east of NS4079 : The ruins of Northfield Cottage. Older maps show it flowing uninterrupted from higher up on the hillside (at the time of writing, current OS mapping does likewise). However, it was perhaps considered an inconvenient obstacle, and the burn has been culverted from the eastern corner of the field to the point shown in this photograph, a distance of about 160 metres (the course of the covered section can be discerned on satellite imagery).

From here, the burn flows out in the open for about 260 metres, before being directed underground again. At a couple of points along the way, rough crossings have been made with boulders; one of these can be seen ahead.
