Dressing a Slate
Dressing a Slate
Having first split the block into slates and then measured off the required size SH5179 : Marking off a slate the quarryman proceeds, finally, to square the sides with a 'cyllell naddu' (literally 'a carving knife'). This is an iron handled steel bladed knife. The cutting is done on a fixed edge - an iron blade fixed into a block of wood. The quarryman's term for this piece of equipment is 'trafal'.
