Castell y Fenni / Abergavenny Castle
Castell y Fenni / Abergavenny Castle
O fewn muriau'r castell yn 1175 lladdwyd Seisyll Dyfnwal ynghyd a nifer o Gymry blaenllaw yr ardal gan dwyll o'r radd eiddaf. Gwahoddwyd y Cymry i ddathlu'r Nadolig ac i drafod telerau heddwch ond fe'u bradychwyd gan neb llai na'r Norman, William de Breose. Yn wir nid oedd pall ar greulondeb y dyn hwn oblegid wedi'r gyflafan fe wnaeth gyrch ar Gastell Seisyll gan ladd nid yn unig ei wraig on hefyd ei fab, Cadwaladr, ac yntau dim ond yn saith oed. Ta beth, yn 1182 fe cododd y Cymry, o dan arweiniad, Hywel ap Iorwerth, yn erbyn y Normaniad gan ddinistrio'r castell. Lladdwyd y siryf ond llwyddodd William de Breos i ddianc am ei fywyd.

During Christmas 1175 an incredulous act of wickedness occurred within these castle walls when Seisyll ap Dyfnwal and other local Welsh leaders, under the pretext of a feast and to discuss peace terms, were brutally murdered. The man responsible for this appalling act of treachery was the Norman, William de Breose. Indeed, de Breos' bloodthirst knew no bounds as he then attacked Seisyllt's castle and spared neither his wife nor his seven year old son, Cadwaladr. In 1182, under the leadership of Hywel ap Iorwerth, the Welsh attacked Abergavenny Castle and razed it to the ground. The sheriff was slain but their prized target, De Breos, managed to escape.
