Several of the paths that traverse Queen's Park are visible here. As a means of celebrating Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee (June 1897) the first phase of the park's creation was completed on the site of some private gardens (1.6 hectares/4 acres) belonging to "Island House", a private house that stood where the public library now stands. By 1907 the Corporation had purchased a further 2.4 hectares/6 acres of land from an adjoining dye works in order to extend the park. This extension included the creation of a second ornamental lake. The "Synch or Swim" lower limb sculptures seen here are part of an Olympic Games-related exhibition in the museum.
