The Sheppey Crossing in the rain, July 2012
The Sheppey Crossing in the rain, July 2012
Taken from the muddy Swale foreshore while sheltering beneath the old Kingsferry lift-bridge. The falling rain may not be visible in this shot, but the rippled surface of the Swale tells the story.

The Crossing, opened in 2006, is the most recent bridge to connect Sheppey with the mainland. In all there have been four bridges, each of them spanning this same stretch of the Swale. The third - the Kingsferry lift-bridge - still stands, carrying a single-track railway, along with the road which used to be the A249, still used by local traffic.
