Castles of Munster: Belvelly, Cork
This C15 tower of the Hodnett family was of strategic importance in guarding the ford linking Great Island to the mainland, the only means of crossing until it was replaced by the existing bridge in 1807. Briefly in the possession of Sir Walter Raleigh, its last occupant was Sir Peter Courthorpe from 1624 - 1650.
