St Andrew's Church, Fairlight
Grade II listed.
Although there was a church at Fairlight mentioned in the Domesday book, nothing of the old church remains. The old church was built in 1180, but demolished in 1845 as it was in danger of collapsing, and also too small.
The present church dates from 1845. The nave has a steeply pitched roof at 44 feet high. There is a north aisle only. There are several windows by T Willement. The design was severely criticised in "The Ecclesiologist" after it was built. The western tower was built in its present style at the request of the Ministry of Defence, and provides a landmark to ships in the channel. It is marked on maritime charts. The tower is some 82 feet high at 536 feet above sea level. It is open to the public and provides wonderful views.
There is a 14th C. bell still in use.
The church suffered damage in the great storm of 1987 and also in 1990. Recently a kitchen, meeting room and toilet have been added.
