CIE locomotive no 177 heads a Tuam Navan train of empty beet wagons across the Shannon Bridge. The bridge is 542ft long with an opening span. It opened to railway traffic in 1851. N0341 : The Shannon at Athlone (June 1981) shows the bridge in its setting across the River Shannon.
The Beet Campaign :: S6814

The Beet Campaign was the name given to the transfer of sugar beet, by rail, from the grower to the beet factory. It ran from October to January and involved the use of wagons normally kept in storage, often running in very long trains. South Wexford saw the most rail activity.
