Transport history at Haven Banks
The warehouse was built to store goods that were being shipped through the port of Exeter, either via the quay on the river or via the canal basin on the right of the picture. The woman is standing between the rails of the track which ran from the main Exeter to Plymouth line to the quay. Part of the track is of Brunel's "Broad gauge" (7ft). On the corner of the canal basin, there was a turntable to take one truck at a time; this was housed in the depression marked by black brickwork. The girders on the right of the warehouse are made from rails recovered from the Exeter tram system when it was dismantled in the 1930s. In the background is the construction site for a new training centre for water activities.
