TF6120 : Pur Fleet

taken 6 years ago, near to West Lynn, Norfolk, Great Britain

Pur Fleet
Pur Fleet
This originally tidal inlet is marked as Pur Fleet on maps, but all other references appear to be Purfleet. Viewed here from the pedestrian bridge over the sluice gate.
On the left is Purfleet Quay, which probably has its origins in the C13 as a loading point of the Purfleet. The elegant classical Custom House at the end of the quay was built in 1683 originally as a merchants' exchange. It was bought by HM Customs 1718 and used as customs house until 1989. Ahead is Purfleet Bridge, which is of medieval origin, although the present structure is mainly early C19, with fragments of C17 brickwork remaining. Try LinkExternal link for further information.
