Bastion cannon, Deal Castle
Bastion cannon, Deal Castle
One of the cannons on the seaward-facing bastions of the castle. The castle was built between 1539 and 1540 on the orders of Henry VIII to counter the threat of invasion from Catholic France and Spain. It was never to serve this purpose and apart from a siege during the Civil War, never took part in any military action. Since 1951 it has been government-owned, currently by English Heritage.
