Buchanan burial ground, Callander
Buchanan burial ground, Callander
See NN6207 : Buchanan burial ground, Callander for a view of the knoll from a distance. The stone structure was originally a chapel, but it is now a roofless enclosure, containing memorials for the Buchanans of Leny and their descendants. There are other Buchanan memorials on the knoll, outwith the former chapel; some of them are visible in this photograph.

Built into the former chapel is what is evidently a relic of a yet earlier structure, namely, a finial (visible here as a pale object above the entrance) inscribed "Buchanan Chapel 1214".

The ruined chapel is mentioned in the Old Statistical Account (in the report on Callander Parish); the report compares the knoll on which it is situated with the nearby mound of NN6207 : Tom ma Chisaig (meaning "Knoll of Kessaig").

The relevant parts of the Old Statistical Account are quoted at NN6207 : Tom ma Chisaig, and need not be repeated here.

The link in the end-note (below) provides further details. See NN6207 : Buchanan burial ground, Callander for a view of the interior of the ruined chapel, and for links to some of the memorials within.
The Buchanan burial ground

This burial ground near Callander was for the Buchanans of Leny and their descendants. It occupies a knoll, on which stand the roofless remnants of a chapel: "there is another hill, larger than Tom-ma-Chessaig (NN6207), at Little Leny, where Norie's Chapel stood, and which is still used as a cemetery by those of the name of Buchanan" ["Old Statistical Account" (1794)]. See LinkExternal link (at Canmore) for further details.
