Inside Surgeon's Gully
Inside Surgeon's Gully
Along with Five Finger Gulley, which can be found a few hundred metres to the north within this grid square, Surgeon's Gulley is another occasional accidental descent route for those getting lost coming off the summit of Ben Nevis in poor visibility. Such descents normally end up with a night of broken sleep for the Lochaber Mountain Rescue team.

The image shows a typical section of the gulley: the steep sides and stepped sections with, in Winter, half frozen waterfalls at either end ensure that once in the gulley it is impossible to climb out. Also as shown in the image, abseiling down is the only option - and only then with care.

As a location it is cold, dark, wet, claustrophobic and generally very scary.
