Erudition in Action - by Ashted locks and tunnel.
In 1813 the Birmingham Canal Navigation Company bought a steam pumping engine from Boulton & Watt and erected it behind the wall in the background. The engine is now in the Henry Ford Museum in the USA and the foundations of its house still exist behind the speaker. The foundations have been excavated and back-filled awaiting redevelopment. It is intended that they will be displayed in the commercial development when it finally happens.
The speaker is Dr Jim Andrew, former keeper of mechanical engineering at the Birmingham Museum of Science and Industry and now a consultant to Thinktank at Millennium Point. His PhD is in economic history, principally Boulton & Watt's canal pumping engines. He was definitely on home territory here. He is addressing a delegation from the Newcomen Society that was enjoying a two day event to celebrate the tercentenary of Thomas Newcomen's Dudley Castle atmospheric steam engine.
