NT8420 : Sourhope

near to Sourhope, Scottish Borders, Great Britain

Sourhope was for many years an outpost of the Hill Farming Research Organisation based at the Bush Estate outside Edinburgh, founded in 1954. Later, managed by the Macaulay Institute in Aberdeen, the farm was used to study vegetation usage, soil biodiversity, sustainable management systems for hill farming and also fibre production from cashmere goats and fine wool sheep. The research station closed in November 2007 and it is now let as an upland farm, attempting to make a living through sheep and shooting interests.
