Not a very good photograph, but a very interesting subject. This strongly built four-square house was originally a public house close by the remote colliery village of Tunshill. It served the few villagers, and weekend walkers on their way to Hollingworth Lake from Milnrow. Access was only by a tortuous cobbled track as seen in the foreground. But trade was insufficient and the pub. closed about 1930. It was still partially in occupation in 1949 when the above photograph was taken, but shortly afterwards was empty and it became derelict. In spite of the close proximity of the M62 motorway it still survived, and on my last visit in 2004, it was being renovated for further use as a private dwelling house.
