SM8733 : Carnachenwen

taken 17 years ago, near to Mathry, Pembrokeshire/Sir Benfro, Wales

Carnachenwen
Carnachenwen
Old coastal farmhouse with traditional stone outbuildings and unusual vernacular features. The name, recorded from C15, appears to mean Cairn of the White Crest (coat of arms or lineage) and close by is its counterpart: Cairn of the Grey Crest (Carnachenlwyd), but I can find no history to account for this. In the C18 a smuggling family held this property which is tucked away not far from the coast amid a network of narrow lanes and old trackways linking farms and hamlets northwest of Mathry village.
