Monument to Dame Anne Morgan, 1764
Monument to Dame Anne Morgan, 1764
Urban 18th century sophistication in a country church. Exquisite monument against the West wall of the nave. The sculptor was Nicholas Read (1733-87), a pupil of Roubiliac who took over his master's studio on the great man's death in 1762. A contemporary commentator said that Read was 'the most deficient in talent of all Roubiliac's pupils'. Read's work, here and elsewhere, surely proves otherwise.
