This hillside is a well-known site for the Adonis blue (Lysandra bellargus) but I'm not altogether certain of the identity of this insect. Some years ago I used to visit this hillside more often than I do now, and in those days I'd have considered July 23rd an unlikely date for the Adonis blue - late for the first brood, early for the second. However, this is summer 2012, the weather's been exceptionally wet, and on this occasion there were Adonis blues around - more, I think than common blues.

This individual didn't open its wings, so I couldn't check for the obvious violet flush of the common blue - but in any case I suspect this is an Adonis blue because of the prominence of the black veins where they meet the wing margins. (To be honest, I was too intent on getting the photo to worry about identification!).
