Medway Valley Walk passing through Indian balsam
Medway Valley Walk passing through Indian balsam
Here, just downriver of Barming Bridge, the Medway Valley Walk passes through a mass of Indian balsam (also known as Himalayan balsam or policeman's helmet - from the shape of the flowers). This highly invasive plant can completely choke river banks where it spreads rapidly. It has a very sweet smell which can be quite overpowering at times. I have never seen it as high as here though where it must have been about ten feet tall.
