Hertford Street
At one time Hertford Street was a continuation of Warwick Road, carrying traffic up to Broadgate. It was closed to traffic in 1969 and redeveloped and pedestrianised in the late 1960s/early 1970s. When first opened after redevelopment it was the more popular end of town, carrying several independent shops at the lower end and national names such as Habitat and W H Smiths at the upper, partially covered end. It suffered greatly in the 1980s downturn and most of the independent small shops disappeared as did Habitat. Later on, other, newer developments appeared elsewhere, retailers moved and it became rather run down. It has recently undergone renovation work, with the brightening up of the covered area and the removal of dingy canopies and some overgrowing vegetation, the end result being a generally lighter appearance.
