The old railway near Litchfield
The route of the former Newbury to Winchester (via Whitchurch) line is now a farm track and, from this point southward, a public footpath. It was part of the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Junction Railway (later part of the GWR), which can also be seen on the Berkshire Downs at Churn (LinkExternal link LinkExternal link ). It had its own station in Winchester - Winchester Chesil (LinkExternal link LinkExternal link ). This stretch closed in 1960.
