Oxford St W1 during the London Olympics
Flags, John Lewis apparently wrapped in the Union Jack and scarcely a bus without advertising from an official Olympic sponsor. Not, however, a colossal number of people: this was taken on Thursday of the first week of the games, when it began to dawn on the organisers that two years of increasingly strident warnings that transport would be a nightmare and that Londoners should stay at home and keep out of the way if at all possible, had had the entirely predictable result of turning central London into a ghost town.
