White Strand Beach - landing point for the 1857 transatlantic cable
The USS Niagara began laying the first transatlantic telegraph cable from this beach in 1857, but the cable failed before it could be completed to Newfoundland. One of many White Strands in the area, this beach is the one south of Doolus head. The foreground does not lie in the square, but most of the beach does. Link
