Former Phoenix Assurance Offices, Welford Place, Leicester
Very dignified, "the best neo-Greek facade left in Leicester", thought Pevsner (and it is just the facade, the remainder having been rebuilt in 1974). Built in 1842 to the designs of William Flint for the Leicester and Midland Fire and Life Insurance Company. The stuccoed facade is graced by an attached portico of fluted Ionic columns and Doric pilasters, making it seem much grander than it would otherwise be for a building of its size. Grade II listed.
