Ruined miners' barracks on the shore of Llyn Teyrn
Ruined miners' barracks on the shore of Llyn Teyrn
The mining company could not have built its barracks in a worse place. The land around the lake is waterlogged and the presence of a very steep slope behind the building meant that surface water drained down to the buildings. There is evidence that the barracks were used for only one winter because of the problem of dampness. The miners had their own name for the lake, Llyn Coblynod (imp's lake) probably after the 'knockers' 'spriggans' or 'bucca' which miners world over believed inhabited mine workings.
