Alastair Brownlee won the Gold Medal in the Triathlon at the 2012 Olympics in London. The Royal Mail promised to paint a post box gold in the home town of each gold medal winner. Alastair was born in Horsforth, and spent his early years here. However it has caused controversy locally, as he lives a few miles away in Bramhope. (A resident of Bramhope took the matter into his own hands and painted a postbox gold and was interviewed by BBC Look North. The Royal Mail promptly painted that box red again.)
I was not the only person photographing this at 8:10 on the day after it was painted.
