Seton Collegiate Church
A church was established here in 1242 and the Setons, with a castle nearby, rebuilt it in the 15-16th centuries. It was cross-shaped, and although the nave has been demolished, the choir, sacristy, transepts and unfinished tower remain. Wealthy people established colleges of priests to say masses for their souls. The Setons established this college in 1492 but the Reformation of 1560 outlawed the mass. The church was a parish church for a short time and then became a private chapel for the Setons, who were Jacobites and lost their lands after the 1715 Rising. The chapel was looted, ceased to be a place of worship and at one time in the 1800s was used as a carpenter’s workshop. The Earl of Wemyss restored the building as a family burial place. Now it is in the care of Historic Scotland, and is a calm and peaceful place, with nicely kept grounds and a loo worth visiting. As well as the church, the remains of the priests’ accommodation are in the grounds, and just outside is Seton House [private], which was built in 1790 on the site of the earlier 16th C Seton Palace.
