NS6065 : Memorial to John Dick
taken 6 years ago, near to Glasgow, Great Britain

Memorial to John Dick
On the base of the structure on the right is the following inscription:
"To the memory of John Dick D.D.
Professor of Theology to the United Succession Synod,
and
Minister of Greyfriar's Church Glasgow,
Who was born at Aberdeen the 10th of October 1764,
And died at Glasgow the 25th of January 1833.
Erected by his congregation. 1838."
I took a note of the Greek inscription that can be seen on the upper part of the monument:
ἹΕΡΟΝ ὙΠΝΟΝ ΚΟΙΜΑΤΑΙ ΘΝΗΣΚΕΙΝ ΜΗ ΛΕΓΕ ἈΓΑΘΟΥΣ
These words have been adapted from Callimachus' epigram 10; plainly translated, the inscription says: "he sleeps a sacred sleep; say not that good men die". (It is not clear whether ἹΕΡΟΝ or ΘΝΗΣΚΕΙΝ is the first word of the circular inscription; if the latter, then swap the two phrases of the translation – it makes no difference to the meaning.)
The site referred to in the end-note has a page on John Dick, which provides further information: Link
In the background is the familiar figure of John Knox, whose monument here pre-dates the Necropolis itself, as explained at NS6065 : John Knox Monument on the Necropolis. In front of it is a memorial for another man of religion, Duncan MacFarlan: NS6065 : Glasgow: Duncan MacFarlan memorial.

Glasgow Necropolis
The Necropolis is 37 acres in extent, and was formally opened in 1833. Like the Père Lachaise in Paris, it was laid out as a garden cemetery. In 1966, its ownership was transferred from the Merchants House of Glasgow to what is now Glasgow City Council. See Linkfor further information.
