Situated at the confluence of two hill streams, this fort linked Templeborough near Rotherham with Buxton. There were well-defined roads between them. It is believed that the first structure on this manmade plateau was wooden - later replaced by a stone structure. For a hundred years the fort was on the northernmost edge of the Roman Empire before expansion moved that line to Northumberland and then into the lowlands of Scotland.
