GNR Henry Oakley
GNR Henry Oakley
Great Northern Railway Class C1 No. 990, built at Doncaster in 1898. Henry Oakley was designed by HA Ivatt to haul the heavier G.N.R trains that the fleet of Stirling 8ft single wheelers was struggling to manage. The new C1 class were basically an enlarged Stirling locomotive with an additional pair of driving wheels (now 6ft 8in diameter). The Atlantic wheel arrangement is named after the 4-4-2 locomotives running in America between Atlantic City and Camden. The 990 Class were the first Atlantic locomotives to run in Great Britain.
