Christ's Hospital almshouses
By the junction of High Street and Market Square this Grade II Listed building has a memorial stone that is inscribed "Founded AD 1312. Re-founded by Queen Elizabeth AD 1597 Rebuilt in the 60th year of the reign of Queen Victoria AD 1897". This is believed to be the site of St Lawrence hospital first documented in 1312. Christ's hospital was founded by Queen Elizabeth I to house '36 maimed soldiers' but by the 17th century it housed '7 ancient women'. Rebuilt 1897 at a cost of £843 7s 9d it then housed 6 unmarried women.
