A total of 653 sailors lost their lives when HMS Hampshire exploded in Scapa Flow . It was considered then that unstable cordite was responsible for this disaster but some suspect sabotage. The prop and its shaft weigh 35 tons and it was during the salvage of these items in those times that honed the skills of the maritime salvage expert.
