Bridge of Sighs (western end)
See NS6065 : Bridge of Sighs for further information, and for a view in the opposite direction; see NS6065 : Wishart Street and the Bridge of Sighs for a side view. The bridge provides access to the Glasgow Necropolis LinkExternal link which is at its other end.

In the present photograph, the blocky little structure on the left is the lodge (1839-40), which was moved from its original position. The gates at the far end were given ironwork with Glasgow's arms on them; the words "Toties Redeuntis Eodem" (the motto of the Merchants House of Glasgow, who were responsible for the creation of the bridge and the Necropolis); the symbol (again, that of the Merchants House) of a clipper on a globe; and the text "William Brown of Kilmardinny / Dean of Guild / MDCCCXXXVII and XXXVIII".

[William Brown was Dean of Guild of the Merchants House of Glasgow from 1837-38, as noted above. In 1856, Robert Baird died while holding the office of Dean, and William Connal, appointed Interim Dean, died after just a few days in office; William Brown then served as Interim Dean for about four weeks, until the time of the annual election.]
