Descending to the College Burn above Mounthooly
A prominent enclosure scooped into the hillside can be seen on the lower slopes of The Schil, partially overlapped by the new forest plantation to the left of Mounthooly. It is interpreted as a Roman period settlement. There is an entrance in the south-east side of the enclosure from which a track-way runs down to the College Burn. Foundations of a rectangular building are visible close to the entrance and the remains of two prehistoric hut circles within the enclosure.

There is a similar scooped enclosure in the top left of the same field but with no sign of internal structures LinkExternal link and another lower down where a modern sheepfold has been constructed LinkExternal link
The field itself shows clear sign of prehistoric farming activity with clearance cairns and transverse cultivation terraces LinkExternal link
The farmstead of Mounthooly dates from the C19th. The building was refurbished in 2008 and is operated as a Youth Hostel bunkhouse sleeping 24 people

The woodland on the left edge of the photo, known as the Wilderness, was planted with over 55,000 broadleaved trees in 1995. This became the largest new native woodland in England.
